Saturday, there will be a special event in the life of North Kent Presbyterian Church. We will celebrate the life and the ministry of Hypatia of Alexandria (370-415 AD). She was a Greek philosopher, mathematician, physicist, astronomer and the head of the Neoplatonic Philosophical School at Alexandria. Bishop Cyril of Alexandria, out of jealousy, had her tortured and murdered by a mob. Her heretical mistakes were to prefer study to marriage, to be a female teacher of males and to know more than the bishop. Please observe a moment of silence in her honor at noon on 4/1/2017.
Children. All children ages 4 to 10 are invited to join the Sunday school class following the Object Lesson. The topic is “When Did We See You, Lord” Matthew 25:31-46. The lesson teaches us to live with grace and justice in Jesus’ name.
COLD NEWS! While few of us have been thinking about air conditioning, Session and the Facilities / Stewardship Committee have been busy checking out options for providing January/February temperatures in July/August. Facilities/Stewardship has worked with several vendors on how to best air condition the sanctuary, narthex and fellowship room. Our evaluation determined that our 30 year old forced air furnaces (used to heat the sanctuary/narthex) are near the end of their useful life. All of the vendors suggested a furnace upgrade now is much cheaper than later and would get a more energy efficient solution for both air and heat going forward.
Session approved Facilities recommendation to use B & V Mechanical (they previously did our boiler and ongoing maintenance/inspections. Their cost estimates were the lowest as well!) and to negotiate final contract terms and the price for the work to be done the later part of April 2017 with a cost not to exceed $45,000.00. B & V has now met with the township engineer and the good news is that the township will NOT require that we install special air handling equipment for the fellowship hall, which would have cost $13,000. Earlier estimates included such equipment in case it would be required by the township.
Our final cost agreement for this project is $26,000.00 and we have $52,000+ in the building fund. While it will not be necessary to seek additional contributions before beginning this project, no additional funds will be refused! This will leave a balance for other important building upgrades. Facilities/ Stewardship is working with the Marketing Committee and Session on how to upgrade our street visibility as our next big project. Watch for plans for a new, more visible front sign and other landscaping / grounds improvements as we let the neighborhood know that we are here for them!
Pastor Karen's email is Pastor.firstname.lastname@example.org Her office hours are Monday - Wednesday 9:30 - 3 pm, and she wants to have lunch or coffee with you!
LET’S DO IT – SEND OUR KIDS TO CAMP! We would again like to assist in sending all our children to Camp Greenwood this summer. You can help by contributing bottle/cans in the T-room, or take them in yourself and put the cash receipt in the collection plate or make a clearly marked cash donation. The tree in the Narthex is tracking our fundraising progress ($10 per leaf), help make it "leaf out" ($506 collected so far!) our support for kids!
Forty Days-Forty Items! Your Mission Committee has a challenge for you: A Forty Day Closet Purge! Each day until Easter, we want you to remove one item from your closet or jewelry box and place it in the clear trash bag provided by your Mission Committee (table in Narthex). At the end of Lent, bring the bag to church. Women's items go to the Working Women’s Closet at the Women’s Resource Center and Men’s items to the North Kent Community Services. Clean up your life this Lent and help others as well!
One Great Hour of Sharing Offering. Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God’s love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. The Presbyterian Hunger Program receives 36 percent of undesignated gifts, while Self Development of People and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance each receive 32 percent.
Please reserve 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 20 and join New City Kids for The Turnaround.
