ASH WEDNESDAY February 14th is Ash Wednesday and we will be participating in a combined service at First Congregational Church of Rockford (192 E Bridge St NE) at 6:30 pm along with Bostwick Lake Congregational. A combined choir is being planned and the three congregations will be coming together again here at NKPC on Maundy Thursday. Please plan on joining us for this special service of repentance and healing prayer. LENT 2018 Book Study: Christianity for the Rest of Us by Diana Butler Bass This lent, you are invited to read and explore themes of prayerful contemplation and spiritual growth practices! TROUBLED WATERS: A COMMUNITY WORSHIP SERVICE of LISTENING, LAMENT and HOPE On Sunday, March 18th at 4 pm, the community is invited to this service at Blythefield CRC church at 6350 Kuttshill Rd. With all of the recent anxiety and questions about our water quality, we will come together to seek the Lord, to hold each other up and to offer words of hope. Summary of SESSION MEETING MINUTES – January 15, 2018 The meeting opened with prayer and worship led by Pastor Fitz La Barge, from Psalm 29. The effect of Martin Luther King’s life was reflected on and discussed. Treasurer’s Report – There were no unexpected expenditures. The cash balance is $39,525.81. There were some questions about the money in the youth and children’s education funds which George explained. Pastor's Report: Vacation days began on Christmas Day and extended through New Year’s Day. Besides preparing and conducting Sunday worship the other weeks plus Christmas Eve, Karen called members confined at home, met with the Youth Crew and the marketing committee, did Greenwood Ministries Association work, and many other activities. Calendar Review for February Calendar was reviewed, additions and corrections were made. Highlighted were the February 4 Annual Congregational Meeting, the February 14 Ash Wednesday joint service at First United Church of Christ in Rockford with Bostwick Lake Congregational Church and NKPC, and the February 18 Sweetheart Brunch. Clerk of Session Report: The clerk shared the letter to Presbytery praising their increased planning and transparency. Remainder of 2017 Unified giving was enclosed. The committee had also been tasked with finding members to serve on a security committee. That committee has been formed. They will pursue research on the subject, and plan to have their first meeting in March. The may bring in a consultant to help develop a plan. Committee Reports: Missions – Cindy presented the report prepared for the annual meeting, denoting month by month the duties of the Mission Committee, including promoting NKPC’s various mission projects, exploring new ideas such as refugee assistance, counting money, sorting and delivering clothing, etc. Recent activities include the following:
Christian Ed. - Children & Youth – The correct curriculum materials have arrived from PCUSA for the children. A Youth Crew sledding party has been planned for January 21. Christian Ed. - Adults – Pastor Karen reported that the Sunday morning discussion group and the Tuesday Bible study of Genesis are continuing regularly. Worship – Pastor Karen reported that there is discussion with Darrin Compagner, pastor of the CRC church across the street, to develop a joint service of lament concerning the contaminated water in the Rockford area. Facilities & Stewardship – No meeting. Pastor Karen reported the ceiling of the Youth Crew room has been painted. Research is currently being conducted to find light fixtures to replace those beyond repair. Old Business – The motion was made and seconded to call the Annual Congregational Meeting for February 4, 2018, immediately following church services. New Business – The contract with the sign company has been signed. CAMP GREENWOOD MATCHING FUND! The session has set a goal of raising $1000.00 in general operating support for Camp Greenwood in 2018. To that end they have designated $500.00 from the 2017 church budget and are seeking matching contributions from the congregation. (This $1000 is in addition to the camper scholarships that we will be sponsoring for our children this summer.) If you can match the session’s donation, please contact Pastor Karen. SLEDDING / MOVIE DAY! The Youth Crew is planning on going sledding at Bertha Brock Park in Ionia on Sunday January 21st after worship. MISSION UPDATE · 21 Care Bags have been delivered to D. A. Blodgett. They were very happy to see them. Thank you for all your help with that project. We will definitely do this again, but not at Christmas next time! · A check totaling $520 for Bucks for Birds has been delivered to North Kent Connect. As always this comes in very handy during the Holiday Season. · The clothing from the Winter Apparel Tree has been delivered to NKC. Watch for the tally of items at a later date. Now, it’s time to refill the tree with gently used items. Those items will be delivered January 8, 2018. · A comforting Christmas surprise awaits a ten year old girl named Molly who will be spending the holidays in foster care through D.A. Blodgett. Thanks to the generosity of this church, we were able to purchase everything on her Christmas wish list, including a cozy comforter and sheets. · This year, as we do every year, our thoughts turn to those members of our clergy who are retired or in need. Please read the inserts in this month’s bulletins and give generously to the Christmas Joy Offering. · Looking ahead to the New Year, the Youth Crew will be doing their own mission work raising funds and canned soups for the Souper Bowl of Caring February 4th and the World Vision 30 Hour Famine.
