Ride on White Pine Trail SESSION MEETING MINUTES Summary – April 17, 2017 The meeting opened with prayer and worship led by Pastor Fitz La Barge. A discussion of goals for our church followed. By consensus, it was agreed to set a goal of an average of 80 individuals in attendance at worship by Easter of 2018. Treasurer’s Report – Almost 41K in the general fund. The financial audit for 2016 was completed. There were no irregularities. Motion from F & S committee. Committee recommends the Session authorize the Committee to apply for an NKPC credit card, with a credit limit of $2000 if possible, and then monitor the card monthly and conduct an annual card audit with a report to Session. Supported and approved. Air conditioning installation will be scheduled in late April. A new trash service, Herrington’s, has begun, saving the church $400 per year. The logo for NKPC has been unanimously accepted by F&S (Marketing is still tweaking). A-1 will be contacted about several small cracks in the parking lot. Discussion about Session accepting the donation of an 8’ stainless steel hood and fire suppression system to be installed in our kitchen. We could then resume using all of our present gas stove. Installation may cost in the thousands of dollars, but this would be an effective way to upgrade the kitchen to current Health Department standards. Motion from F&S committee: Session approves that the hood and suppression equipment be evaluated. The F&S committee would also work to identify installation contractors and cost including possible temporary storage and provide to Session a final proposal. Supported and approved. A donor came forward who will pay to repair the floor and upgrade the men’s restroom. Best repair would be to tile the floors. The toilet in the men’s room doesn’t meet today’s handicap standards. Motion from F&S committee: Facilities to pursue a proposal in conjunction with the donor for the costs to upgrade and repair the men’s, women’s, and nursery restrooms and direct the committee to work with the donor with regard to their support for a portion of the proposed project. Supported and approved. A summer facility clean-up will be scheduled, probably the first Saturday in June, for both inside and outside clean-up. Some members have been investigating the installation of a disc golf course on NKPC property. The thought is to install three baskets. There is a local manufacturer in Saranac, who makes the kinds of baskets that will last and can be locked in securely. Motion: To authorize F&S to use $1500 of the building fund to purchase and install a 3 basket disc golf course on NKPC property. Supported and approved. There will be a 6-8 week lag time as the baskets are manufactured. It was suggested the Boy Scouts might help with installation. The new sign will cost twenty thousand dollars if we have to start from scratch. We already have a base, with electricity in place. Cost should be considerably less than the 20K, perhaps about $15K. They are still working on costs. There are questions about the 32 sq. ft. allowed by the township, and what is included in those measurements. Pastor's Report: Pastor Karen presented a list of activities with which she has been involved. She stated that she would like to dedicate the Camp Greenwood staff at NKPC on Sunday, June 18. Next Presbytery meeting is June 15. Pastor Karen asked Session permission to serve as chaplain at Camp Greenwood June 25-30. Motion made, supported, and approved. Pastor mentioned she thought it would be a good idea to buy a couple of $100 bricks to be installed at the Rockford dam with NKPC’s name on them. Approved by consensus. Pastor Karen presented a draft letter to the Leadership Team at Presbytery regarding Presbytery funding and budgeting, which she had been asked to write last month. After discussion and suggestions, the draft was given to the Clerk to edit and develop a final copy. Clerk of Session Report: No correspondence. Committee Reports: Missions - The 40 day Closet Purge for the Working Women’s Closet has come to an end. Next project is preparation for the Pentecost offering on June 4th. We keep 40% for local mission. Last year that was Safe Haven Ministries. Cell phones will be collected for them during the month of May. This weekend is the 30 hour Famine/Hunger Fast for the Youth Crew. Motion: Permission to take up a collection during church on Sunday, April 23rd. Supported and Approved. This money and the Souper Bowl money will go to World Vision. Half of the money allotted for Declaration of Intent/Shared Mission for 2017, plus half of the money already in the budget, will be sent to the Unified Mission account in the amount of $915.50. Christian Ed. - Children & Youth – Over half of the $2000 goal to send our kids to Camp Greenwood has been raised. The worship center for the kids in the Sunday School room has been completed. Youth Crew - There is interest in planting a youth garden. Membership – The Spring Fling will be changed to May 21. Worship – Discussion of using recorded music in worship has been referred back to the worship committee. ANNOUNCEMENTS Children. All children ages 4 to 10 are invited to join the Sunday school class following the Object Lesson. The topic is “A Palm Sunday Parade” Matthew 21:1-11. The lesson teaches us to celebrate the coming of Jesus to Jerusalem. DON'T MISS OUR MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE on 4/13/17 at 7 pm! COLD NEWS! While few of us have been thinking about air conditioning, Session and the Facilities/ Stewardship Committee have been busy checking out options for providing January/February temperatures in July/August. Facilities/Stewardship has worked with several vendors on how to best air condition the sanctuary, narthex and fellowship room. Our evaluation determined that our 30 year old forced air furnaces (used to heat the sanctuary/narthex) are near the end of their useful life. All of the vendors suggested a furnace upgrade now is much cheaper than later and would get a more energy efficient solution for both air and heat going forward. Session approved Facilities recommendation to use B & V Mechanical (they previously did our boiler and ongoing maintenance/inspections. Their cost estimates were the lowest as well!) and to negotiate final contract terms and the price for the work to be done the later part of April 2017 with a cost not to exceed $45,000.00. B & V has now met with the township engineer and the good news is that the township will NOT require that we install special air handling equipment for the fellowship hall, which would have cost $13,000. Earlier estimates included such equipment in case it would be required by the township. Our final cost agreement for this project is $26,000.00 and we have $52,000+ in the building fund. While it will not be necessary to seek additional contributions before beginning this project, no additional funds will be refused! This will leave a balance for other important building upgrades. Facilities/ Stewardship is working with the Marketing Committee and Session on how to upgrade our street visibility as our next big project. Watch for plans for a new, more visible front sign and other landscaping / grounds improvements as we let the neighborhood know that we are here for them! We will celebrate the life and the ministry of Hypatia of Alexandria (370-415 AD). She was a Greek philosopher, mathematician, physicist, astronomer and the head of the Neoplatonic Philosophical School at Alexandria. Bishop Cyril of Alexandria, out of jealousy, had her tortured and murdered by a mob. Her heretical mistakes were to prefer study to marriage, to be a female teacher of males and to know more than the bishop. Please observe a moment of silence in her honor at noon on 4/1/2017.
