Sunday there will be a gathering for all the members and friends of NKPC to discuss the qualities and expectations for the next pastor. Last week the session sent a list of the qualities they have agreed on, and offer them for the congregation’s reflection and comments. That meeting will be held immediately following worship in the sanctuary. It will include a discussion of whether to call a pastor for an indefinite term or a Designated Pastor. Information on this type of call and process can be found on the table in the narthex.
Children in Worship summer program finishes today. On September 6, all children ages 4 – 10 are invited to join us in the Sunday School program “Growing in Grace and Gratitude”. It will again be offered following the children’s message in adult worship. Sept 6th is a communion Sunday. As the children have received instructions, they will rejoin the congregation for this sacrament. Nursery time will continue to be provided for the under 4 year olds Beginning on Sunday, September 13 and through the winter we will worship at 10:45. Rally Day will be celebrated on Sunday, September 13. We will be celebrating and honoring our children and teachers and the choir, elders and deacons. We will have a sign-up list for salads, desserts and chips for members to bring. The main course of sloppy joes will be provided by the Membership Committee. Outdoor activities will begin after the service. They include: disc golf, bean bag toss and ladder golf. The activities will last about 30 minutes while the meal is being set up. On Sundays September 20 and 27 we will welcome Rev. Howard Vanderwell and Ms. Norma deWaal Malefyt, from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. They will talk with us about Presbyterian worship and about why we do what we do in worship. That conversation will happen after the worship service in the sanctuary. Photographers Wanted: Membership Committee is looking for any members that would be willing to take family/individual pictures for a Photo Wall in the church lobby. Please see Mike Nelson for further information. On Sunday, October 4 there will be a congregational meeting to elect a Pastoral Nominating Committee and to vote on whether to call a pastor for an indefinite term or a Designated Pastor. Please plan to attend that important meeting. Mission - Back-to-school Supplies: We have collected and donated to North Kent Community Service Center items with a value of approximately $389.72. Thank you to everyone for their generous donations! Mission - Ronald McDonald House: Have you ever noticed the Pop Tab collection box on the Mission table and wondered what that was all about? Well, the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan collects and recycles those tabs. Thanks to donations like ours, they are able to provide a “home away from home” for families of children seeking medical attention in our local medical community. So, before you return those pop cans for their deposit, take a moment to remove the tab and bring your tabs to church. Thanks! Christian Education for Adults will be offering the Disciple Bible Study Course beginning this fall. Jan and Jerry Wallace, members of the First Congregation church in Rockford, have agreed to be the leaders. We welcome to our worship to hear more about the program. A sign-up sheet will be available for those who are interested. Thank you. We heartily thank Marilyn Drumm for cleaning both the ovens in our kitchen. Very big job well done! Membership Committee will not meet September 2 and the Worship Committee will not meet on September 6th and October 4th. These will be scheduled for a later date. Please do not use red juices in Fellowship Hall. Rally Day will be celebrated on Sunday, September 13. The Membership Committee is planning a number of fun events after worship including food. Keep watching the Yellow Pages for more details. ANNOUNCEMENTS Welcome Guests! If you are a guest today, know that we are glad you are here, and hope you will be blessed by the worship service and our fellowship time afterwards. May everything that happens in this worship service bring us closer to our loving God. The session will meet following worship this morning. On Sunday, August 30 there will be a gathering for all the members and friends of NKPC to discuss the qualities and expectations for the next pastor. This past week the session sent a list of the qualities they have agreed on, and offer them for the congregation’s reflection and comments. That meeting will be held immediately following worship in the sanctuary. It will include a discussion on possibly calling a Designated Pastor. Information on this type of call and process can be found on the table in the narthex. Adult Education is again sponsoring the Sunday Morning Discussion Group. It will meet for about an hour before the Sunday Service. They will discuss current topics, usually with the help of a book on a specific subject. This is not a Bible study, although the subject matter is relevant to our Christian faith and religion. The discussion is informal, and while helpful, it is not necessary to have read the book, chapter or chapters that are the focus of the day’s discussion. The group is open to all who want to attend. Bringing in fresh ideas and perspectives is welcomed, and needed. We’ll start up again in the fall and the topic(s) are still open. Children in Worship summer program has been a great success! The last class will be August 30. We are looking forward to a new program in the fall called “Growing in Grace and Gratitude”. Once again, it will be offered for children age 4 to 10 when they are excused from the sanctuary after the children’s sermon. A great many people have been helping us and we are grateful for their enthusiasm and assistance. Beginning on Sunday, September 13 and through the winter we will worship at 10:45. The Mission Committee reports that $560 was given to Mel Trotter Ministries for towels and bedding. So far in 2015 Mel Trotter Ministries has provided 40,497 bed nights for men, women and children. We are pleased and grateful to be able to assist in that ministry. Please continue to bring “over the counter” medications for Mel Trotter. Mission - Back-to-school Supplies: In August each year the North Kent Community Services Center collects school supplies to fill over 300 backpacks for area students. They have the backpacks but need the supplies. Please donate some of the following to help low-income families get ready to start the new school year. Place your donations in the bin under the Mission table in the Teeuwissen Room. Suggested supplies include: Pencils, Pens, Pocket Folders, Erasers, Crayons, Markers, Notebooks, Paper, and Glue Sticks. Watch for more information. Following worship on those days they will talk with us about Presbyterian worship and why we worship as we do. The Process Has Begun On Tuesday, July 28, the Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery of Lake Michigan approved the formation of a Pastoral Nominating Committee at North Kent Church. Over the next weeks the session will be giving prayerful thought to which members they will nominate for that committee and will present the names of those persons to be elected at a specially called congregational meeting to be held early in the fall. Based on congregational discussions on Sunday, June 21 and 28, and on a careful review of the church’s finances, the session voted to call a full-time Designated Pastor for a two year period. At the congregational meeting to elect a Pastoral Nominating Committee the congregation will also vote on whether to call a Designated Pastor for two years or pastor for an indefinite term. The session will continue to discuss the Expectations for a Future Pastor and plans to finalize those at its meeting on Monday, August 17. Those Expectations will be shared in a letter to the congregation that week. On Sunday, August 30 following worship there will be a congregational discussion of those Expectations. Members and friends of the church will offer their comments before the Expectations are referred to the eventual Pastoral Nominating Committee. Please pray for the session as they continue their important work in this process. AnnouncementsWe welcome Pastor Paula back from a well-deserved vacation with friends and family. You were missed. Communion: Sunday, August 2 we will celebrate Communion. In the Presbyterian Church we understand that this is Jesus’ Table and he invites all who love him to share in this sacrament. Our children have received instruction in Holy Communion and will also join in this sacrament. Special Thank you: We welcome Stephanie Spalding to our worship service on August 2. She will be providing a solo with her own piano accompaniment for special music. Stephanie is the granddaughter of Arthur and Jo-Ann Spalding. Last Week Rev. Leonard McElveen, Director of Spiritual Services at Mel Trotter Ministries, led our service. Our congregation has been generous in our gifts to Mel Trotter Ministries, and he showed us how the “Sermon on the Mount” is being implemented today in Grand Rapids MI. The Membership Committee will meet Wednesday, August 5 at 7:00 pm. The Presbyterian Women’s Association met on Sunday, July 19 and decided to donate $2,000 to the Ron and Celina Roberts family to help with medical expenses. Flowers: Please remember to check out the Flower Board, as many weeks are available. Just sign your name on the board, find the envelope which corresponds to that date, place $20.00 cash or check in the envelope, and put it in the offering plate. In the envelope is a slip of paper you can use to designate your donation. Save the dates: Rev.
